Tank Game Design Project - Introduction

Introduction

Welcome to the Game Design Community! The game which we will be designing during this period is a top-down 2D action/adventure/puzzle game which can be run on desktop and android so if you haven’t already, contact ThePersonalAppsTeam@gmail.com to opt-in as a contributor so that you can get the game and follow along in the design. If you do not happen to have a device that can run the game, you can still participate and follow along on YouTube by subscribing here […]. If you have any questions/suggestions/problems/opinions/feedback/comment…gulp!, leave them in the comments so as to join the community discussion or send it over to ThePersonalAppsTeam@gmail.com.

The design project will take the following format.
On each new post, we will be designing and discussing on an aspect of the game. The ideas which you provide on those discussions will be analyzed and a new post will be released to show the ideas which will be implemented in the game for that aspect of the design so that everyone can see and criticize it.
The discussions are going to last for a week, at which time, we will release a new post showing the results of the discussions. Then, the next day, we look at a new design aspect of the game. After a month or so the ideas are compiled, implemented in the game, packaged and distributed to all registered contributors, also, a video showing the current state of the design, is made and uploaded on YouTube (you can subscribe here …). So stay in touch inorder to get a chance of seeing your ideas implemented in the game.

At the end of the entire design, when the game is complete, all registered contributors are presented with a certificate, a copy of the finished game and get their names added to the list of contributors to the game.

About the game - As of right now

As of right now, the name of the game is “Tank Game”, it is a top-down action/adventure/puzzle game which requires the player to maneuver the tank around a 2 dimensional arena. The aim of each level, is to destroy the enemy’s stronghold by defeating the enemies, dodging flying objects, solving puzzles and encountering the boss at the end of the level. The game allows full freedom of navigation
Game play : Each level of the game requires the player to discover and destroy the enemy’s stronghold. In the process of doing that, the player is faced with various oppositions such as the enemy tanks which try to destroy the player tank by setting traps, launching an offensive on the player by taking various formations and trying to shoot him down/blow him up, anything they can do really to stop him from destroying their stronghold. The player has to navigate through the level by destroying or maneuvering the enemies, picking up items, unlocking doors, solving puzzles and at the end of the level, doing battle with the boss, who is the chief protector of the stronghold.
The game is divided into chapters with each chapter adding a new mechanic and an added level of difficulty.

Controls : By looking at the screen, while playing the game (as shown in the screenshot above), you will notice the controls at the bottom right of the screen, the pause button at the top right of the screen, and the indicator bar at the top left of the screen which show the amount of health and coins that the tank has. First, you need to get acquainted with the controls.
At the bottom right of the screen, you will find the controls which you can use to control the tank while the rest of the screen is for navigation/orientation of the tank nozzle.
The button at the center is the action button and it is used to implement actions. The actions are selected by using the arrow buttons around the action button.
The up/down arrow buttons are used to cycle through the weapons that the tank currently has.
The left/right buttons are used to cycle through the items like health, keys, power ups, boosters etc.
By looking at the top-right of the action button, you will find the target button which if held, can be used to set the orientation of the tank’s nozzle.
At the bottom-right of the action button is the align button which is used to adjust the tank’s nozzle to the direction in which it is currently facing or to automatically aim at a nearby enemy.
For desktop controls, press E and R to rotate the tank’s nozzle and use the mouse to press the control buttons
You can press the pause button to restart the level, go to the main menu, go to the chapters, toggle the sound or to continue with the game.

Story Line : The story unveils as the game proceeds. No spoilers…yet!

Note that everything in this post is open to discussion, and will be expanded as we continue the design and development of the game.

The design will begin by mid January 2018. Opt-in to get registered and get notified when the design begins. Thanks!
